Can I prevent claims from happening?
No - but you can minimize the chance of a claim happening.
Each year we receive dozens of claims from massage therapists across Canada. Most of these claims are the result of bodily injury to a client from a slip and fall or an accident within the home or clinic.
Many of these claims cannot be prevented but you can reduce the severity and frequency of claims. Since most claims happen around the home and clinic, the immediate area needs to be maintained and monitored. In the winter a properly cleaned and salted walk is the bare minimum you need to do. In some instances, additional railings or anti-slip surfaces may need to be installed. In the summer walk ways need to be clear of debris, toys, etc.
Inside your home or business, make sure there are no loose carpets or stair treads and there are sufficient handrails that are properly installed. A thorough inspection of the furniture in your unit is required on a regular basis, including hinges on cupboards, shelves attached to the walls, mirrors, etc.
With all too much frequency, a claim arises from a massage table. Tables have collapsed or tipped over due to loose fittings or worn parts. Tables need to be inspected daily and any sign of wear or damage needs to be addressed promptly.
A few moments of prevention is all it takes....
